Johannesburg – Exposed fake “TikTok” doctor Matthew Bongani Lani doesn’t even have a matric certificate it emerged on Wednesday.
The Gauteng Education Department (GDE) said it can “confirm that there is no existing record of a National Senior Certificate (NSC), or matric certificate, for Matthew Bongani Lani, who has been masquerading on social media as a medical practitioner”.
The GDE further said in a statement: “Our official records indicate that Mathew Bongani Lani was initially enrolled at Bordeaux Primary School in Ranburg in 2007.
“However, he was referred to Gresswold Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) School in Kew, Johannesburg 2010.”
The GDE said the referral followed an evaluation at the time, which determined that Bongani Lani’s academic performance dictated that he be transferred to an LSEN school.
Subsequently, his academic journey at Gresswold LSEN School came to an end in September 2012.
“Mathew re-emerged on our system in 2016 at Fourways Adult Centre, where he wrote three subjects as a part-time candidate,” the GDE said.
“However, he only passed one of those subjects.
“Based on these records, and further verified information at our disposal from UMALUSI, we can confirm that Mathew Bongani Lani indeed does not possess a matric certificate.”
Earlier this week media reports said the social media personality, with over 294 000 followers on TikTok, was facing criminal charges for impersonating a medical doctor.
“Dr. Lani” has been selling himself as a medical doctor on social media platforms, where he has also used the alias “Sanele Zingelwa”.
