Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor has died.
A statement from the 56-year-old Grammy-winning singer’s family did not mention the cause of her death.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time, the singers family said.
Sinead O’Connor had battled mental health issues and more recently – about 18 months ago – she suffered a massive heartbreak when her beloved teenage son, Shane, committed suicide.
The often controversial singer was propelled to international stardom in the early 1990s with her rendition of the Prince hit ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U“.
In 1992 O’Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live with a cover version of Bob Marley’s song “War“, as a protest against the Catholic Church’s abuse of children.
In 2018, O’Connor – the mother of four children Jake, Roisin, Shane, and Yeshua – converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat.
