African Champions Banyana Banyana Trounce Uzbekistan In Türkiye

Banyana Banyana….(3)0 (10’ Jermaine Seoposenwe, 13 Tojiddinova Shokhida (OG), 25’ Noxolo Cesane)

Banyana Banyana brushed past Uzbekistan as the irrepressible African champions comfortably beat the Central Asian nation 3-0 in the Turkish Women’s Cup at the Emirhan Sport Complex in Antalya, Türkiye, on Saturday night.

It was the SASOL-sponsored Banyana’s opening match of the competition and coach Desiree Ellis’ charges raced to an early lead after Jermaine Seoposenwe opened the scoring in the 10th minute.

The South African senior women’s team increased the lead a few minutes later after Shokhida Tojiddinova beat her own goalkeeper, Kumushoy Gulomova, in a costly own goal in the 13th minute.

Banyana star player Noxolo Cesane scored the third when she beat Gulomova in the 25th minute.

Banyana Banyana kept Uzbekistan at bay to open their Turkish Women’s Cup account on a winning note.

The African champions return to the pitch when they face Slovenia at the same venue on Tuesday, (21 February 2023).

Despite the devastation and more than 43 000 known deaths from the earthquake a fortnight ago, the 2023 Turkish Women’s Cup – the seventh edition – is being held in Alanya from 15 to 21 February 2023.
