Johannesburg – Rape charges have been dropped against a group of Illegal miners – better known as “Zama Zamas” – who were arrested in Krugersdorp after several women shooting a music video were attacked and violated.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Thursday said it decided to withdraw the charges of rape, sexual assault, and robbery with aggravating circumstances against all 13 men and the minor.
The accused had been charged for the shocking incidents that happened on 28 July 2022, where eight women were allegedly gang-raped while filming a music video at a mine dump in Krugersdorp.

On Thursday the NPA said in a statement: “Upon consultation with the complainants in the matter, and evidential material currently at the disposal of the NPA, it became apparent that there is insufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution”.
Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA Gauteng Spokesperson added: “Prosecutorial-guided investigations will continue in pursuit of justice for all women affected by this heinous crime.
“The prosecution will, however, continue in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court in respect of charges of the Contravention of the Immigration Act.
“The case was postponed to 1 November 2022, for further investigations and all accused will remain in custody.”
