In a first-of-its-kind move, South Africa has a Women’s Artistic gymnast team at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, which begin Friday.
The 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games involving some 5 000 athletes continue until 8 August.
Before the South African team left for the UK, Donovan Jurgens, President of Gymnastics South Africa said: “It’s every athlete’s dream to represent their country on the international stage and we are incredibly proud of our gymnasts, and we wish them all the best in Birmingham.”
The Artistic Gymnastics competition are scheduled for Saturday, while the Rhythmic Gymnastics competition will begin on Monday, 4 August 2022.
“It’s a major achievement to qualify for the Commonwealth Games and we’re looking forward to the team’s performance in Birmingham. It is encouraging to see the growth of Women’s Artistic Gymnastics,” said lse Pelser, Team Manager and Head Coach.
