A female traffic officer was fatally run over by a speeding motorist driving under the influence of booze, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said Saturday.
Thirty-seven-year-old female Traffic Warden Luleka Sobetshe was attending to a crash scene along the N12 West – between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park – when the speeding motorist in a beige Renault Sandero ran her over.
JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the horrific incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning at about 3 am.
“The driver of the Sandero then failed to stop after striking Traffic Warden Sobetshe. Officers on the scene gave chase and managed to apprehend the driver,” said Fihla.
“The driver of the Sandero was breathalysed and the reading from the alcometer was 0.69mg/l which is over the legal limit of 0.24mg/l.
“Emergency Services were called and unfortunately, Traffic Warden Sobetshe was declared deceased on the scene.”
The arrested suspect has not been named.
However, the 28-year-old male motorist will appear in court next week facing charges that include drunk driving and culpable homicide.
“JMPD Acting Chief of Police Thulani Maxwell Khanyile and the whole department send their deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Sobetshe family, friends, and colleagues. May her dear soul repose peacefully,” said Fihla.
