Gerard Piqué and Shakira are heading for a divorce just when media reports suggested there was trouble in paradise after photos emerged of the singer in an ambulance.

Although Shakira cleared the air saying she was accompanying her father to hospital after he had  a fall – the 45-year-old Waka Waka singer did confirm rumours she was separating from her husband, who is a decade younger.

In a joint statement at the weekend the pair, who have two children, announced their separation in a joint statement.

“We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our top priority, we ask for respect for our privacy. Thank you for your understanding,” said the statement.

The Columbian pop star, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, met the Barcelona FC defender in South Africa on the set of her music video for the 2010 World Cup.

Piqué appeared in Shakira’s music video for “Waka Waka” – the official song for the World Cup in South Africa.

At 35, Piqué is at a crossroads. His football team Barcelona are said to be eager for him to retire so that the club can save as much as $70 million in wages.
