Four people died and eight others – including two babies -were injured in a horrific accident on the N2 North bound, before Spaghetti Junction in Durban, just after 8 pm on Friday.
First responders – ALS Paramedics Medical Services and Life Response – said they found “total carnage” on the scene.
A small truck with a canopy that was believed to be carrying an entire family had somehow lost control and collided into the rear of a haulage truck.
“One male and two females from the small truck were found to be severely entrapped in the wreckage with fatal injuries.
“Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for them and they were declared deceased on the scene.”
The Ethekwini Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic tools to free the survivors from the wreckage.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services said eight others including two babies sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical.
“They were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby Durban hospital for the further treatment that they required.”
