Miemie Mokoena the 28-year-old woman who told police that her baby had been kidnapped by two armed men has confessed to murdering the infant.

The Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court heard that last year Mokoena called police to her home in Itsoseng phase 2, near Hebron on 26 June 2021, and registered a case of kidnapping.

The accused told the police that two men armed with a knife and a firearm accosted her in her shack, and took her baby away.

She told the police that the kidnappers were looking for her lover.

The next day a young girl walking past a small river in Hebron, spotted a lifeless body of an infant floating in the water.

She then reported the matter to members of the community, who later alerted the police.

During interrogation by the police, Mokoena confessed to committing the crime.

She is being charged with murder, perjury and defeating the ends of justice.

Henry Mamothame, National Prosecution Authority Regional Spokesperson, said the case against Mokoena, who is out on R500 bail, has been set for a pre-trial conference on 20 May 2022.
