Inform Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema’s hattrick was all it took to sink defending UEFA Champions League title holders Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Chelsea flattered to deceive in the first leg of the quarter-final when they pulled one back through Kai Havertz five minutes before the end of the first half.
But an error outside the penalty area by Chelsea goalkeeper Édouard Mendy early in the second half let in Benzema, who made no mistake with an open goal at his mercy.
In the other UEFA Champions League quarter-final on the night Bayern Munich lost 0-1 to Villareal in Spain. Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal of the contest in the 8th minute.
The return legs are next week.
