After three just over weeks of football, Senegal’s Lions of Teranga ended their 60-year hunt for the coveted AFCON Cup as well-deserved winners’ of the R75 million ($5 million) prize money.
On Sunday, the Senegalese national team triumphed over Egypt 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.
Who can forget the distraught teary-eyed Pharaohs of Egypt after their loss?
It was as if the Red Sea had burst its banks and soaked the Egyptians whose talisman Mo Salah didn’t take a spot-kick because Senegal had scored enough penalties to win the game.
By Tuesday, Senegal was yet to make public how much of the prize money will end up in pockets of philanthropic Sadio Mane and his teammates.
The Liverpool forward famously said: “Why would I want 10 Ferraris, 20 diamond watches, or 2 planes?
“I built schools, a stadium, we provide clothes, shoes, food for people who are in extreme poverty.
“I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me.”
For now, the whole of Senegal is celebrating the first-ever AFCON Cup win.
