The Speaker of the City of Tshwane Council Katlego Mathebe has resigned to take on a new Mayoral Committee role.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Alderman Katlego Mathebe as a new Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC),” Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams said on Wednesday.

Mathebe – a member of the Democratic Alliance – will assume the role of MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management, said the mayor.

“Alderman Mathebe’s appointment to the Mayoral Committee follows her resignation yesterday as the Speaker of the City of Tshwane Council,” said Williams.

The Speaker’s resignation was effective as of the close of business on Tuesday, 18 January 2022.

The mayor said Council will soon convene to appoint a new Speaker.

“On behalf of the City of Tshwane, I would like to thank Alderman Mathebe for her sterling work during her tenure as Speaker of Council,” said Williams.

“She presided over Council meetings in a commendable manner during some of the most challenging political periods in the City.

“I look forward to working with Alderman Mathebe in her new role as MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management.

“Her appointment means that all 10 multiparty Mayoral Committee positions have now been filled.”

MMCs play a crucial role in supporting the work of the Executive Mayor to deliver quality services to residents.
