A gang of armed men in a silver Audi on Friday ambushed a truck carrying inmates to a court in Vosloorus, 30 km from Johannesburg.
Six inmates escaped during the ambush. At least five of them face serious charges including attempted murder and business robbery.
The police said they have launched a manhunt for the inmates who escaped from custody while en route to court at Vosloorus. They were also searching for the armed men who freed the inmates.
Detailing the daring escape, Brigadier Brenda Muridili said: “According to reports, the police truck transporting the prisoners was ambushed by three armed men driving a silver Audi vehicle at the corner of Barry Marais and Rondebult streets.
“The five of the six escapees were due at Court for a Dawnpark case of business robbery, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearm and the sixth escapee was due for his first appearance on a shoplifting case.”
Brigadier Brenda Muridili said all the accused are Zimbabweans.
Five of the escapees have been named as Robert Hlatshwayo, Thulani Dube, Augustine Moyo, and Mbongiseni Mkandla.
