A horrific head-on collision along the N1 in Limpopo has left 17 people dead and eight others injured.
The head-on collision involving a 22-seater Iveco minibus and a Toyota SUV occurred on Tuesday afternoon near the Mookgophong off-ramp.
“It is alleged that the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle due to a tyre burst and collided head-on with a 22 seater Mercedes Benz bus,” said the Limpopo Transport and Community Safety department on Wednesday morning.
“The bus burst into flames and 16 occupants trapped inside, including the driver were burnt to death.
“The driver of the SUV was also killed on impact.”
The department said eight people survived – six were seriously injured and two escaped with minor injuries.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has sent messages of condolences to the affected families and wishes a speedy recovery to the survivors.
The MEC is once again pleading with Motorists to inspect their vehicles before they get into the road.
She is concerned that most of the fatal accidents reported on the N1 have a common cause.
