The kidnapped 11-year-old girl rescued by police in Soweto has been reunited with her family and the focus has shifted to the possible extradition of a suspect from Mozambique.

Maha Qassim was snatched outside her primary school in Mayfair, Johannesburg, more than a month ago.

Police said the main suspect was arrested in Mozambique and moves had been initiated to have him returned to South Africa to face trial.

Recounting how the girl was rescued, police said members of the Crime Intelligence Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, assisted by the Johannesburg Flying Squad pounced on a house in Devland, Soweto around midnight on Tuesday.

“The girl was rescued unharmed and was taken to a medical facility for medical examination. She has since been reunited with her family,” said Lt Col Robert Netshiunda.

The suspects who were at the house evaded arrest.

Lt Col Netshiundaand said two suspects, Ayanda Kekana (50) and Fortune Kambule Ndlovu (36) were arrested in December 2021 in connection with the same kidnapping.

The pair were denied bail when they appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 7 December 2021.

Last week on Friday a 40-year-old man was arrested in Mozambique in connection with kidnapping the 11-year-old girl.

“Interpol is busy with the extradition process,” said Lt Col Netshiunda.
