One person, who was riding at the back of a van, died when it overturned along the N3 eastbound, near Berea Road, Durban on Wednesday afternoon.
Emer-G-Med paramedics said they responded to a call for help at about 3 pm.
On arrival on the scene, paramedics found that a single light delivery vehicle was found to have overturned, said Emer-G-Med.
“Six adult males were ejected from the load area of the vehicle during the mechanism of the collision,” said Emer-G-Med.
“One man sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on arrival of paramedics.”
Five survivors were treated and stabilised on scene for injuries ranging from minor to moderate before they were taken to a nearby hospital.
Police are investigating.
With more than 800 people already killed on South Africa’s roads midway through the festive season, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Wednesday warned, the “human factor still remains the main causal factor for most of the crashes during this period”.
Mbalula added: “Statistics reveal that people who died on our roads this year were passengers at 35% followed by pedestrians at 34%, drivers at 26% and motorcyclists at 1% and bicycle riders at 1%.”
