Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu ended Mamelodi Sundowns 17-match unbeaten run with a 75th minute Augustine Mulenga goal in Durban’s empty King Zwelithini Stadium.
It was the first time the Brazilians had lost an away game since January.
The game was tied at 0-0 when McCarthy brought on the 31-year-old former Zambian international who scored with his second touch.
Mulenga beat an offside trap and his angled shot went past a diving Denis Onyango in goal for Sundowns.
The goal had Amazulu owner Sandile Zungu dancing with joy in the stands. There were no fans allowed in the stadium owing to Covid-19 protocols.
AmaZulu repelled everything Sundowns threw at them until the final whistle.
The win sees AmaZulu climb to third on the DSTV Premiership Log behind Orlando Pirates. Sundowns remain way out in front.
