The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Tuesday said it was probing a shooting in which a uniformed sergeant shot an armed constable.

Recounting events that led to the shooting on Friday, 10 December 2021, IPID said gunshots were heard in Randfontein.

IPID said at about 15:00 a police sergeant and other officers at Randfontein Police Station heard the multiple gunshots nearby.

They rushed to Maugham street, where they spotted a man firing his rifle from under a tree.

IPID said initial investigations show that the sergeant instructed the man to drop his rifle.

“The person did not comply instead he looked at the officer and ignored him,” said IPID adding, “he continued pointing his firearm towards a silver vehicle that was across the street”.

IPID said the sergeant, “after seeing that his call to drop the firearm was ignored … fired three rounds with a 9mm pistol towards a male person with a rifle.”

The man was hit in the chest.

“It was later discovered that the person who was shot in the chest under the tree was a police constable from DPCI TOMS [Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation – Tactical Operations Management Section],” said IPID.

The constable was firing and pointing his rifle at an Audi A3 that had been hijacked when he was shot.

“The officer was then rushed to Milpark Hospital with injuries to the chest.”

A suspect linked to the hijacking is recovering from gunshot wounds in hospital under police guard. Another suspect was shot dead.
