An alleged cop killer ironically named Innocent Slender Sibanda on Tuesday appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where he was remanded in custody pending further investigations.

Sibanda was arrested in connection with the murder of 47-year-old Sergeant Jan Mataboge Mohlahle. The sergeant was robbed and killed while he was off duty earlier this year in May.

The robbers shot and dragged the police officer in the streets of Shabashabeng informal settlement in Pretoria West.

Sergeant Mohlahle’s body was discovered by a passerby two days later.

The deceased was attached to the VIP protection unit at the Union Building in Pretoria.

A team made up of police officers from Pretoria West and members of the Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation unit said they “positively linked” 37-year-old Sibanda to the murder.

Sibanda was arrested on Saturday, 4 December 2021 in Shabashabeng.

He was subsequently charged with murder and appeared in court.

The case is postponed to 13 December 2021 for further investigation

Police are still searching for Sibanda’s accomplices.
