The wait is over – the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will announce the final results of the local government elections tonight.
All indications are that the African National Congress is leading in most municipalities – though with a reduced majority, followed by the Democratic Alliance then the Economic Freedom Fighters.
The Inkatha Freedom Party appears to have done very well in KwaZulu-Natal, where it is likely to control most municipalities.
The IEC will officially make the position clear later today.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend the IEC announcement of the final results at its Results Operations Centre at the Tshwane Events Centre, Pretoria.
The president will, in his capacity as President of the Republic, deliver brief remarks during the results announcement ceremony.
The announcement ceremony, which will be broadcast live, commences at 6 pm.
