Vote Counting On Track, Final Results On Thursday

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on Wednesday said progress in the finalisation of local government election results was at 69 percent of expected results.

“At the level of capturing, 90 percent of results are already in the system awaiting scanning and auditing,” said the IEC in a terse statement issued in the morning.

“This means of the 64 502 results expected, 58 059 have been captured into the results system.

“Of the 58 059 results captured, 44 707 have been scanned into an image and thus available.”

The completion rate in the Northern Cape is 89 percent, 82 percent in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga and the Free State are at 78 percent.

The completion rate in the rest of the provinces ranges between 55 and 69 percent.

The IEC said it remains committed to finalising results expeditiously while taking care to ensure that all necessary verifications are enforced.

The number of municipalities where counting of votes has been completed was 111 from a total of 257, said the IEC.

“By midnight there about … we should have completed the auditing,” said IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo.

He said the final results will be announced on Thursday night.
