Decuplets: ‘Expert’ Doctor Pooe Not Qualified

Dr. Mpho Pooe, who this week assisted Independent Media owner Dr. Igbal Survé to cement his claim that Goisame Sithole gave birth to a record 10 babies, is not qualified as an obstetrician and gynaecologist.

The revelation was made on Friday by the obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric clinical, and academic departments at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Tembisa Hospital.

“Records of the College of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) confirm that Dr. Mpho Pooe has not qualified as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, as per CMSA requirements,” said medical experts Prof. P Soma-Pillay, Prof. I Smuts, and Prof. S Adam in their joint statement.

Prof. Soma-Pillay is the head of clinical and academic department obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital. Prof. Soma-Pillay is also the president of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa.

Prof. Smuts is the acting head of clinical and academic department of peadiatrics at the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

Prof. Adam is the head of the clinical unit obstetrics at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

The professors said they had “noted, with regret, the highly improbable and defamatory statements made by the Independent Media Group and Dr. Mpho Pooe about staff in our institutions”.

“We state unequivocally that none of our medical personnel has been involved in the antenatal, intrapartum, or post-natal care of a woman with eight or more babies in 2021.”

It is not the first time that Survé has courted controversy in the medical fraternity.

Years back, Dr. Survé claimed to have a close relationship with Nelson Mandela and was in fact his doctor.

In 2014, a Leadership Platform article in Business Report – a newspaper owned by Survé’s Sekunjalo group – wrote that Survé had been Mandela’s doctor “on and off Robben Island”.

The claim has never been corroborated and has been discounted by many journalists as “fictional”.

When the decuplets story broke in June, Dr. Survé – according to his publications – donated one million rand to the parents of the alleged Tembisa 10 as they had become known.

No one has ever seen the babies and the alleged mother Goisame Sithole was earlier this year detained at a hospital for mental observation and possible treatment.
