Two cops aged 38 and 42 were injured in a shootout with burglars In Tonga near Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.
The two police officers were on routine patrol in the border town when they came across a business burglary that was in progress.
“Upon noticing the police vehicle, the suspects opened fire and a shootout ensued,” recounted police captain, Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi.
The police officers suffered gunshot wounds in the shootout on Monday and were taken to hospital.
Investigations are underway, but no arrests have been made yet.
“An attack on the police is an attack on the state,” said the provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Zodwa Mokoena.
The general said those who commit such heinous acts will be found and they will face the full might of the law.
