Banyana Drawn In Tough Cosafa Group A

Seven-time Cosafa Women’s Champions and hosts Banyana Banyana have been drawn in a tough Group A with Angola, Malawi, and Mozambique.

The South Africans are hosting the 2021 edition of the tournament in Nelson Mandela Bay next month, from 15 to 26 September.

Botswana, who were runners-up in last year’s tournament, are up against 2011 winners Zimbabwe and guest nations Tanzania and South Sudan in Group B.

Africa’s lone representative at the recently concluded Olympic Games in Tokyo – Zambia’s Copper Queens – headline Group C, which is also made up of Namibia, Eswatini and another guest nation Uganda.

The top team in each pool and overall second best will qualify for the semifinals.

Thursday’s draw for this year’s Cosafa Women’s Championship was conducted virtually on the regional body’s online platform COSAFA.TV.

Cosafa general secretary, Sue Destombes, says the tournament has attracted 11 countries including nations from other regions.

“This will be our second Cosafa Women’s Championship played during the Covid-19 pandemic after the successful staging of the event last November and we once again thank the Eastern Cape Province and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for their tremendous support.”

She also hailed the sponsors for their continued support despite the challenges which Covid-19 has posed.

“Without these valued partners we would not be able to stage these events, while we are also grateful once again to our hosts, the SA Football Association, who continue to lend their invaluable expertise,” said Destombes.

“It is the fourth year in a row the women’s senior tournament will take place in Nelson Mandela Bay, where the support in the stands has traditionally been superb.”

However, owing to the pandemic fans will not be allowed into the stadium during matches. All matches will be played behind closed doors.
