Fans of league champions Mamelodi Sundowns are up in arms over a star they want to be on the club jersey.
“Since winning our 10th Premier Soccer League title in September 2020, it was widely reported in the media and expected by our supporters that Mamelodi Sundowns would add a star to its badge,” said the club in a weekend statement.
If granted permission by the PSL the new star would symbolise Sundowns’ 10 league titles.
This is common practice in leagues on the continent and across the world.
“Mamelodi Sundowns presented this to the PSL at the close of the 2019/2020 season, and we are still awaiting permission to place a ‘10th title star’ on our badge,” said the kabo yellow club.
Masandawana fans are not happy with the limbo and want a decision before the new jersey is out.
However, it is the first time a South African club has managed to win PSL 10 titles. There is no local precedent for the PSL to simply allow the star.
But time is running out for the Brazilians to get their Puma kit sorted before the new season starts.
Fans have expressed their displeasure on social media with some saying its “jealousy” that was getting in the way of allowing the new star.
