South African swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker won Silver in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke at the Tokyo 2020 late on Monday night.
Schoenmaker was edged out for first place by 17-year-old US teenager Lydia Jacoby who swam a blistering last 50m to touch in 1min 04.95sec.
Schoenmaker’s 1:05.22 swim was good enough for second place ahead of defending champion, Lilly King, who took bronze in 1:05.54.
“Amazing … I can not complain I have been happy since the heats,” said Schoenmaker, South Africa’s first swimming medalist in 21 years.
