Virtual Farewell For Joburg Mayor Struck By Virus

The funeral service for Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo, who succumbed to Covid-19 complications, was held virtually on Wednesday morning.

The 53-year-old mayor died in hospital on Friday – two weeks after he tested positive for Covid-19.

The City of Johannesburg streamed the virtual service live (See Video below).

Before his hospitalisation, Makhubo had been isolating at home. He tested positive for Covid-19 on 21 June.

When the mayor died, President Cyril Ramaphosa said: “Losing Cllr. Makhubo at such a difficult time for the City of Johannesburg and the country is a blow.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and with his colleagues at this difficult time.”
