Suspended ANC member Carl Niehaus was fined R3 000 and released from police custody around 8pm on Thursday just hours after he was arrested for breaching Covid-19 restrictions.
He was arrested outside the Estcourt Correctional Centre, where former president Jacob Zuma is serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court.
Niehaus, who tells anyone who will listen that Zuma was jailed unfairly, was led away by police during a live broadcast.
He had organised a gathering of about 100 people to protest the imprisonment of the former president. Some of the protesters wore ANC regalia.
After his release, Niehaus said he was continuing his protests of the imprisonment of Zuma.
Niehaus posted a video on Twitter in which he said he would not be cowed into silence over the jailing of Zuma, who he described as “the first political prisoner since 1994”.
