A 28-year-old woman, whose Facebook posts had South Africans in a spin when she detailed her hijacking from inside a boot of a moving car, has been arrested for lying.
At some point on Thursday, the woman said the car had stopped and she could hear her hijackers as they discussed raping her. She also said her cellphone battery was “dying”.
The posts raised alarm among Facebook users.
However, a few hours later police said the woman had been located unharmed in Soweto, Johannesburg.
Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the woman had been arrested on charges of “perjury, defeating the ends of justice and fraud”.
The woman had earlier reported the “hijacking and kidnapping” to the Protea Glen Police station in Soweto, which turned out to be fake.
